Theoretical and Computational Biophysics
Biological systems are maintained through numerous interactions spanning broad spectrum of time and length scales. How unique properties of the system involving biological functions emerge from individual processes is a key question of biological physics. Prof. Changbong Hyeon employed theoretical approaches based on soft matter physics, physical chemistry, and statistical physics to explore biological systems. His primary research interest ranges from the self-assembly, mechanical responses of biopolymers (DNA, RNA, and proteins) at the single molecule level to the interactions among these molecules. Further studies toward understanding biological phenomena at the systems level are a long term research plan of his group. For the last decade, Prof. Hyeon has made major contributions on the issues such as (i) physical principle underlying molecular motors, (ii) origin of heterogeneity in biomolecular processes, and (iii) nonequilibirum thermodynamics for living systems.
