The Euclidean gravitational path integral includes saddle points where the metric is complex. Witten proposed a criterion for which complex metrics are allowable in the path integral and which are not, based on the work of Kontsevich and Segal on allowable background metrics for quantum field theory. I will review the KSW criterion and its relevance to black hole saddles.
